I am tempted to write a long discourse on my take away from the study of the Book of Hebrews but I shall not do that today in the hope this is not a bore.
The book of Hebrews sandwiched between Philemon and James is nary a retell of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) nor is it a referendum on the Book of John. The writer spends hardly any time regurgitating the story of JESUS’ Walk on earth. He brings into focus the teachings of CHRIST vis-á-vis Old Testament prophecies and GOD’s commandments, precepts, and tenets. The author attempts to answer questions – the what’s, why’s and how’s possibly generated by a study of the first four books of the New Testament. Putting meat on bones, adding sinew to flesh would be one way to put it. To capture it aptly, the Book of Hebrews delineates historical mythology from spiritual faith and Biblical divinity. As a child of GOD, two of my favorite Bible passages are: a) Matthew 19: 26 and b) Matthew 6: 33. The former tells me that there is absolutely nothing that my GOD cannot do and the later informs me of what I need to do to live successfully on earth and win the ultimate prize of spending eternity with Lord JESUS and JEHOVAH. This epistle to Hebrews validates that.
As a student of STEM: science, technology, engineering, and medicine, I am immediately fascinated by the concept of metamorphosis as it applies to Christian spiritual growth and development. A ready exemplar is the butterfly: the egg is cocooned in a particular, peculiar environment where the yolk provides necessary nutrition for the developing embryo as it transitions into a larva and ultimately into the beautiful butterfly, we all love. Similarly, so does “the infant” Christian feed fat on the word of GOD (Solid Food) in pursuit of righteousness [holiness] and is subsequently regenerated into “the Mature” Christian (Hebrews 5: 13-14). The Bible asserts that men and women of faith cannot make it to Heaven without being holy or rather earnestly striving to live a life of holiness (Hebrews 12: 14). It is not enough to keep GOD first; we must live righteously.
As we spend time in study, as we spend time in prayer, as we spend time in praise, GOD shapes us and molds us to be the person HE needs us to be. Our dreams, wants, expectations, aspirations etc., dovetail into HIS perfect will for us and we begin to live a life that fulfills GOD’s destiny for us. I am of the considered opinion that as GOD sent HIS Son with the singular destiny of redeeming mankind from eternity in damnation, so are we, each of us, individually here on earth for HIS purpose. To achieve our singular destiny, we must seek HIM first, feeding fat on solid food.
I am continuously amazed by GOD’s love of, and goodness to, man. Who is man, what is man that GOD cares for him/her so much (Psalm 8: 4-8)? HE sent his only begotten Son, GOD designated High Priest in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 5: 5-6), to die on the cross to save man from the repercussions of sin, the vestiges of sin. HE was pilloried by tabernacle leadership, resoundingly beaten by Roman soldiers, crucified at Golgotha and left to die exposed to the elements. Shall brothers and sisters dither, do they procrastinate, do we dawdle in secular distractions and misconceptions? Do we allow ourselves to be easily ensnared by the trickery of the evil one? I think not.
I cry out to Lord JESUS; help us to keep you first. We want nay need to keep you first as we strive with fidelity to live a life that glorifies you. May the Lord attend to our prayers with the urgency it demands. AMEN.
