HISSTORY
The word “History” can be decoupled into two component parts: “His” and “Story” or better still can be imagined as these two distinct words merged, HISSTORY sans an S. While this concept is not exactly novel, I confess that I did not pay as much attention to this as I probably should until an exhaustive discourse on this subject by a dear friend and colleague, Frontes McEwen, put it front and center. Consequently, Frontes’ detailed, and robust analysis of the word History is our word for today.
When we think of the word History and are circumspect enough to reflect on its true meaning, separating one word from the other, one must ask the question, “Who is the HIS in HISSTORY?” For believers, we trouble ourselves no further for we know without a shadow of a doubt that “HIS” refers to Jehovah GOD – the GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Maker of Heaven and earth, alpha and omega, creator of all things. HIS story, GOD’s story is told every day of our lives. It was told yesterday; it is told today and shall be told tomorrow and forever more. From the beginning of time until the end of time, the story of our GOD prevails. GOD is but a playwriter penning a screenplay for reasons unbeknownst to us. Perhaps, for HIS pleasure. Man is but a character playing distinct roles as determined by GOD. Can man change his or her role in GOD’s script? Can clay change its utility in the potter’s hands? While we may choose to spend many hours ruminating on this, the answer to both questions can be found easily and readily in Jeremiah 18:1-6, Isaiah 64:8. Man cannot change the course of GOD’s plans. HE is and remains the author of all things; HE knows the beginning from the end and the end from the beginning. When HE formed the first man, Adam from the dust of the earth (Genesiss 2:7) and subsequently Adam’s helpmate, Eve (Genesis 2:21-22) from Adam’s rib, GOD knew exactly what would become of both. When HE brings each of us into a new day 4.5 billion years (AMNH) later, GOD knows precisely what will happen this day.
This invariably throws up a lot of questions. It is my hope that as questions are asked, and answers are presented, a better understanding of the concept of HISSTORY is achieved.
