The Book of Mark Chapters 13 and 14 NIV
JESUS, sitting with HIS disciples on the Mount of Olives opposite the Temple, discusses The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times. “Do you see all these great buildings, not one stone here will be left on another; everything will be thrown down (13 v.2). HE adds, “Watch out that no one deceives you.ย Many will come in my name, claiming, โI am he,โ and will deceive many.ย When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains (v5-8).” HE advises the disciples to be on their guard and foretells what will happen to them on HIS account. The gospel must be preached to all nations HE asserts (v.10), because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning (v.19). โAt that time people will see the Son of Man coming in cloudsย with great power and glory.ย And HE will send HIS angels and gather HIS elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the Heavens (v26-27).” “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away, HE affirms.” โTherefore, keep watch…. (v35).” “What I say to you, I say to everyone: โWatch! (v37)โโ
Two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread, JESUS is in Bethany. While reclining on a table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman approaches HIM with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume made of nard. She breaks the jar and pours the perfume on HIS head (14 v3). Some people in the building are very upset and sternly reprimand the lady. They think it’s a waste of exceedingly expensive perfume. They completely lack an understanding of what has happened before them. JESUS promptly corrects them. Almost immediately, one of the Twelve, Judas Iscariot, leaves to betray JESUS to the chief priests (v10-11).
The succeeding passages in the fourteenth book of Mark discuss the events surrounding The Last Supper (v12-26), Peter’s denial of JESUS (v27-31), Gethsemane (v32-41), JESUS arrest (v43-51), and HIS testimony before the Sanhedrin (v53-65). It ends with an account of Peter disowning our Lord three times before the rooster crows twice (v66-72).
