Day Seven: Sunday, January 12, 2025
The Book of Hebrews chapter 7 focuses primarily if not exclusively on Melchizedek, King of Salem, Priest of GOD, King of Righteousness, King of Peace, Priest Forever. Verse 7 succinctly states, “And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater.” Verses 9 and 10 go on to say with justification, “One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.”
The third through fifth paragraphs allude to parallels between Lord JESUS and High Priest Melchizedek. For JESUS, as is Melchizedek, is not a Levite. This is wordplay (words in italics) for JESUS lives forever (v24) and so does Melchizedek (v3).
However, a huge difference exists between JESUS and Melchizedek. Scripture records that unlike Melchizedek, and I shall humbly stand corrected if I need to, JESUS’ priesthood is not without an oath. GOD said to our Lord “The Lord has sworn and will not change HIS mind: ‘You are a priest forever (v21).’”
Death prevents other priests from continuing in office but JESUS lives forever. Our Lord is able and willing to intercede for believers in perpetuity (v23-24). “Unlike other priests, HE does not need to offer sacrifices day after day (v27a)” for “HE sacrificed for our sins once for all when HE offered HIMSELF (v27b).”
