The Book of Hebrews Chapter 11

Hebrews 11:1 is used extensively to define the word “Faith.” The New International Version (NIV) of the Bible reads, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurances about what we do not see.” The King James Verison (KJV) of the Bible may be more popular and perhaps apt because it is sans spiritual phraseology, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (KJV).”

As I go back and forth from one version of the Bible to the other (NIV-KJV), I must say I have a better understanding of the word, “Faith.” Do I now have a better understanding of why GOD accepted Abel’s sacrifice? Probably. The Bible records that Abel’s offering testified to his (Abel’s) righteousness – his gifts witnessed that he was righteous (v4). Hebrews 11 goes on to talk about Enoch who pleased GOD; Enoch who was translated for he did not see death (v5-6).

I am of the opinion that Hebrews 11 is anchored on verse 6. Verse 6 states the following: i) Without faith it is impossible to know GOD, ii) Anyone who comes to GOD must believe that HE exists, iii) GOD rewards those who earnestly seek HIM.

The Bible is littered with notable Bible characters of faith repute who believed and trusted absolutely in JEHOVAH; although they did not see all their promises fulfilled during their life time, they shall. For “GOD had planned something better for us (the living and the dead) so that only together with us would they (departed men and women of faith) be made perfect (v39-40).

There is a lot of depth in the teachings of Hebrews 11. I shall return to it now and again to glean more insight, understanding, instruction and guidance. May the grace of GOD be upon us all!
